Statement of Andy Stern,
President of SEIU (Service Employees International Union)
On Chairman Rangel’s Tax Reform Proposal

“America’s tax system should reward hard work. Americans expect our tax system to encourage saving and benefit the majority of Americans. Unfortunately, today’s tax laws favor the wealthy. Working Americans without expensive lobbyists and tax lawyers see a system with loopholes, schemes, dodges, and intricate rules that benefit those who least need it.  These loopholes and schemes raise the tax burden of working people and undercut vital public services. I applaud Chairman Rangel for jumpstarting the debate about how to make the tax code reward work. By providing tax relief for 90 million Americans and taking steps to ensure big corporations and wealthy people pay their fair share, Chairman Rangel’s proposals would bring more balance and fairness to the tax code.”
